Wood carving, like stone carving, has traditionally
featured largely in temple and pa ace architecture with
little free standing 'sculpture' work produced commercially.
Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate
pillars, door panels, linters and window shutters with
the aim of protecting t buildings from evil intruders.
Scenes of legendary figures placed within floral dÎcor
set a more pleasant and educational tone.
When producing tools and objects for everyday use, sculptors
had a much freer hand in choosing subject matter. With
the arrival of European influences, wood carving started
to develop along more innovative and commercial lines.

Although there have been noteworthy
carvers, for example; I Nyoman Cokot, Ida Bagus Nyana
and Ketut Nongos, artistic integrity has suffered as
a result of the commercial boom in the tourist industry.
These days’ whole villages specialize in producing certain
styles of work.

"I am be a wood carver since I
was 10 years old. I studied at elementary school. After
study from morning until one o'clock in the afternoon,
I start to make a woodcarving with about 7 kids. My
uncle teach us how to make wood carving, and he give
the tool by free.
Make a small cat from the wood is the first job. We
are difficult to make that cat, but about two weeks,
we knows to make. When I was study at senior high school,
I didn't make a cat again, I start to make human, mask,
birds( eagle). I work at my workshop at home and I finished
work at my uncle. I rent a shop at north of Ubud (Tegalalang)
I sell souvenir/ handycraft. Me and my brother make
the wood carving and I sell at my shop.
My brother care my shop and I study Tourism at Denpasar
for 2 years, but I am still help to make wood carving.
At my village, most of my friend are woodcarver, now
they are still has a group and work at their workshop,
no teacher, and they are more profesional now. Sometime,
if I have new sample of wood carving I make at my friend
workshop, they will get a big job if the sample can
sell at the shop.
Not many school of wood carver in Bali, my brother went
to that school for about 3 years, and now he is a
teacher of that school.
